Mixed results leave share market flat, analyst predicts
Rising shares of Chinese goods and services provider Alibaba have cut the value of China Mobile's shares in recent months, in part due to worries about China's slowing economic growth, and it's now also hurt that the Chinese company has no strong alternatives for online retailing.
With its share price falling by 30 per cent over the past year, Alibaba's shares have slumped 50 per cent since China's Internet giant posted its weakest-ever quarter in terms of revenue in May, according to research firm Gartner. Analysts at Gartner said the decline in Alibaba shares reflects doubts among Wall Street about Chinese mobile phone players Alibaba and Huawei, and that worries about slower growth are fuelling investor doubts.
Barry Bannister, an analyst at Raymond James, said Chinese companies that use China Mobile as their main source of supply have seen their share prices drop sharply this year. The company's shares are now down 40 per cent since the middle of May, with some analysts saying such fears are helping to drive down the share price of the company.
"We're not buying any more China Mobile shares," said Bannister, a veteran analyst of China's online retailing industry. "China has to be taking the tough and smart economic measures, and so China Mobile is going to be one of the largest players in China but now there aren't many alternatives."
Despite Chinese mobile telecoms companies investing heavily in building out international networks for their products in the US and elsewhere, their profits are likely to suffer after Alibaba lost out to rivals in China as China Mobile expanded its international sales, Bannister said.
"The Chinese carriers are in pretty serious trouble because it's just a question of time before the Chinese carriers lose their market share and that's the end for China Mobile," Bannister said. "They will probably sell off their stock as part of the transition of China Mobile from a business to a consumer experience company... China Mobile is essentially in a bad state."
Suffering from lower demand means the company's sales for the second quarter may have slumped 10 per cent, Gartner said.
The company's sales in its primary market of China dropped 9 per cent in the first half of this year, with growth in Japan and France not quite matching the pace of growth in the rest of the world. Gartner expects China Mobile's growth to suffer again this year after it reported a quarter-on-quarter loss in its second quarter of 2015.
In June, the company's stock slipped 6.8 per cent after reports in China said the search-engine giant would not be investing significant funds in its China Mobile operations.
China Mobile declined to comment.

South korea clinch third place on penalties with wins over Singapore and Indonesia
South Korea have qualified for the 2015 World Cup for the first time since 2011 in Group B, winning one of the qualification rounds to ensure they finish outside the group stage.
They are now third on six points after wins over Singapore and Indonesia and beat Singapore 4-2 on penalties to secure third place in Group B.
South Korea, who started the tournament as hosts, will face arch-rivals Australia in Group C in July before facing Japan in Group D in the last game of the group.
They will face Mexico in July after winning five out of their last six group games.
The two host nations were separated by five points in their qualification rounds for the World Cup finals in Brazil but have now secured their place.
Team South Korea coach Kim Yong-joon said his side have gone to every step to prepare for this campaign.
"Our mindset is different. We just have to stick to the plan. It's difficult to predict the result but the key is to keep going," Kim said.
South Korea finished the 2011-12 World Cup runner-up and lost the previous two competitions by one point to then world champions Argentina, in their second qualification campaign for the World Cup.
"We're still thinking about qualification. We just have to accept the tough schedule," Kim said.
"It will be a challenge and we will have to continue to work hard. The results so far show we have the players to be successful."
Lee Hyo-ryong scored the second to put South Korea ahead in the 33rd minute in their 4-0 win over Singapore and the hosts kept their composure and fought hard to find the equaliser late on.
South Korea have won 10 of their last 11 group games, reaching the first stage in each of those instances, although they have failed to meet their qualifying and playoff commitments.
